More than 70 firefighters battled a huge fire at a waste disposal site in east London, where 1,000 tonnes of waste was alight.

Dramatic images posted on social media showed thick black smoke billowing into the sky as the inferno raged in Leyton on Thursday evening.

Plumes of smoke could be seen for miles around after the blaze broke out next to Brisbane Road, the home ground of Leyton Orient.

One person tweeted that the fire was visible from beyond Tottenham Hotspur's new stadium in north London.

The London Fire Brigade was called to the scene shortly after 5pm and fought the fire into the evening.

A spokeswoman said: "Ten fire engines and 72 firefighters and officers have been called to a fire at a waste management site in Auckland Road.

"The brigade was called at 5.14pm and fire crews from Leyton, Leytonstone, Homerton, Stratford, and surrounding fire stations are attending the incident.

"The cause of the fire is not known at this time."
