Leveson report to be released next Thursday

The Leveson inquiry will publish its report on the culture, practices and ethics of the UK press next week.

Lord Justice Leveson will release his findings — which are expected to include recommendations for the future regulation of the British press — at 1.30pm next Thursday.

The report will be the culmination of more than a year of evidence-gathering that was sparked by the phone-hacking scandal at the News of the World.

David Cameron ordered the Leveson inquiry in July last year. The report is due to be the first of two parts of the investigation into the role of the press and police in the phone-hacking scandal.

Lord Justice Leveson and his panel of advisers heard months of evidence from key figures including celebrities, lawyers, politicians and journalists.

Formal evidence started on November 14 last year and the inquiry sat for a total of 88 days until June 30 this year. MPs will debate the report in Parliament on Monday, December 3.

The total cost of the inquiry is expected to reach £5.6 million.

The Prime Minister was left embarrassed when his private messages to former News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks were read out when he gave evidence to the hearing.

He has indicated that he will implement any recommendations in the report which are not “bonkers”.

The second part of the inquiry cannot begin until detectives complete their investigation into alleged phone-hacking and corrupt payments to police.
