Residents in south west London have expressed concerns over damage caused to their homes from the controlled detonation of a World War Two bomb found nearby.

Thousands of residents were evacuated after the unexploded device was discovered on a construction site in Fassett Road, Kingston on Thursday.

Kingston University was evacuated and local schools were also cleared as Scotland Yard called in experts from the Ministry of Defence to examine the bomb.

Many were unable to return home for Thursday night as police recommended at least 1,500 residents should stay clear of the cordoned area.

The ordnance was safely detonated at around 4pm the next day, however the explosion caused many windows on Fassett Road to smash.

Brandon Mitchel also posted pictures of broken glass on Fassett Road saying: “most people return to their homes except for a few unlucky on Fassatt Road, the blast zone is incredible to see.”

Rachel Major posted a photo on Twitter showing the damage done to her home, saying: “waiting to get my window boarded up…”

Others expressed concerns over the buildings on Fassett Road being left vulnerable to crime after loosing the protection of their windows.

Some residents were tweeting Kingston Council about the broken glass, saying: "I have friends living on Fassett Road with some of their windows at the front destroyed, will there be patrols on the road just to make sure residents are safe from potential crimes?"

Pete Wand-Tetley also asked the council for help to clear up the street: “We’re still cleaning up glass from the explosion!”

Pictures also emerged of a huge crater caused by the bomb's detonation in the construction site where it was first discovered.
