Lily Allen faced a backlash online after expressing excitement about Britain leaving the EU.

In a series of tweets posted after Brits backed Brexit in the referendum, the Smile singer said she thought the vote could trigger a shift in the "political climate".

On Friday she said she had been left in tears over the result, but in an apparent about-turn she posted today: “Never thought I’d say this, possibly because project fear worked on me.

“I’m now quite excited about #Brexit and shift on political climate.

“I’m not saying I wouldn’t be happy if we’d remained, not at all.

“But if in time it levels the playing field and helps to narrow the gap between the rich and poor, that can be no bad thing.

“The people have spoken, some for good reason. I stand by them.”

A stream of negative comments were flung at the star, with some accusing her of using the Brexit vote to seek attention.

Allen was scheduled to perform a DJ set at Glastonbury this weekend but was forced to withdraw after suffering a knee injury.

The outspoken singer has previously used Twitter to launch a foul-mouthed tirade Jeremy Hunt and label Donald Trump a moron.
