A huge tree crashed on to a north London road “just inches” from shocked onlookers this morning as the capital braced for the arrival of Storm Katie.

Lea Bridge Road was closed near the junction with Chatsworth Road in Clapton after the tree fell at the crossroads as people waited to cross the street.

Twitter user Mussel Men wrote: “Just saw a huge tree fall across Lea Bridge road, inches away from severely injuring someone. Scary.”

And Latimer Curtis posted a photo of the tree, writing: “Waiting 4 traffic lights to change on lea bridge road when this happened. No one hurt thankfully.”

Meanwhile, in Hendon, police have closed Vivian Avenue at the junction with Rundell Crescent after scaffolding fell to the floor.

Severe weather warnings have been issued for the city this Easter, with winds of up to 50mph set to batter London later today.
