London start-up creates smart cycling bell that aims to make it easier to navigate the capital

A London start-up has created a smart cycling bell that tries to direct cyclists on the safest possible route through the capital.

The smart navigation tool, Blubel, attaches to the handle bars of a bike and uses flashing LED instructions to help cyclists navigate.

Through a mobile app, the device directs riders with crowdsourced information gathered from other users, who have recorded busy and dangerous roads by ringing their bell.

The concept was awarded the Venturespring Smart City Challenge award in 2015, which invited developers to create technology solutions to some of the most serious problems facing modern cities.

Founder of Blubel, Sasha Afanasieva said: “I broke quite a few smartphones trying to check my map whilst cycling, so I just realised there must be something better.

“The idea is to use the device to crowdsource really useful cycling data.”

The bell guides the way using simple gestures with a blue light showing the final destination and a green light indicating the next turn. Watch the video above for a full demonstration.

The new smart cycling accessory is set to be ready to purchase this year.
