A kind-hearted father-of-two has been hailed a hero after he shelled out £159 for a train ticket to help a stranded student get home safely.

Grace Georgina, 21, was left sobbing at Euston after losing her return ticket to Liverpool.

In a heart-warming turn of events, nurse Martin Gallagher, 45, paid for a replacement.

After a desperate search on social media, the “overwhelmed” student was able to find her Good Samaritan.

According to the Sun, Mr Gallagher was visiting friends in London when he came across the Liverpool John Moore’s University student “hyper-ventilating” in the station.

He told the newspaper: “I have two daughters myself, 12 and ten, and if something like that were to happen to them, I would want someone to help them.

“The poor girl was so upset and started hyper-ventilating and I just thought ‘that’s not nice’. The staff were making a really big deal of it.

“I don’t even remember how much the ticket cost, but I paid it because I would never want anyone to leave my girl in that sort of state.”

Following the kind gesture, the fourth-year student wrote on Twitter: “I do not want to hear anyone EVER say a bad word about people from Liverpool.

“I lost my return ticket from London and even with a collection Receipt, email/Trainline app the staff refused to reprint (SIC).

“A man saw me crying down the phone about my night/day and stepped in to pay ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY SIX POUNDS for my single journey replacement. Jesus Christ. Good morning.”

She later added that the actual cost was even steeper at £159.
