Four people escaped today unhurt after a fire broke out at a luxury house in Belgravia.

London Fire Brigade said residents inside the home in Chesham Place left the property before crews arrived after they were alerted by their smoke alarm.

The blaze damaged a section of the ground floor at the terraced house in the upmarket street, where a five-bed home is valued at more than £13 million.

More than 20 firefighters were sent to the scene at 7.17am and remained at the house until shortly before 9am when the fire was brought under control.

Crews from Chelsea, Kensington, Fulham and Soho attended the blaze.

Station Manager Winston Douglas who was at the scene said: "Crews worked hard to get this fire quickly under control and to contain it to the ground floor.

“Thankfully there were no reported injuries as the residents were alerted to the fire by their smoke alarm.

"This fire really highlights the importance of having a working smoke alarm and testing it regularly - they can save your life.

“Our advice is to have a minimum of one alarm on every level of your home and the safest option is have the alarms linked together.

“This will give the earliest warning if there is a fire in your property - and give you vital time to get out and call 999."

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
