Flood alerts have been issued for several areas along the Thames including the South Bank and Greenwich.

The Environment Agency (EA) this evening warned overnight tide levels on the river could lead to flooding similar to that seen over the weekend, when waters rose because of a "supermoon" linked to Friday's solar eclipse.

Custom House, Bankside by the Tate Modern and Greenwich's Royal Naval College, are among the areas likely to be affected at high tide, which is shortly after 4am this morning, an EA spokesman said.

Putney Embankment, parts of Twickenham and the Chiswick Mall and Strand on the Green are also expected to be affected.

Across the country, a further nine overnight flood alerts have been issued.

Last month the Thames burst its banks in Greenwich and Richmond, swamping land normally metres above the water line.

Over the weekend tides rose in northern France as well as London, creating the rare sight of the iconic Mont St Michel completely cut off from mainland Normandy.
