A fire tore through a six storey block of flats and damaged a roof terrace in south east London this evening.

Six fire engines were called to the scene in Tower Bridge Road, Bermondsey, just before 5.30pm this evening.

It took crews from Dowgate, Dockhead, Lambeth, Greenwich, Soho and Whitechapel over an hour to control the blaze which was located on the top floor.

A spokeswoman from the LFB said 10 per cent of the building was destroyed, including the roof structure and decking.

Witnesses said they could see flames creeping up the side of the building and smoke billowing from the top floor.

The road was temporarily closed and drivers were being urged to avoid the area.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
