A driver had to be cut free from his car after it was rammed into a set of metal railings following a collision with a van.

Firefighters used cutting equipment to free the driver who was trapped in the black 4x4 following the smash, which happened at the junction of Gloucester Place and Crawford Street in Marylebone.

The car mounted the pavement at about 7.30 this morning, with only the railings standing between the 4x4 and a nearby house.

Three people were injured in the smash, after which a driver and one other person was taken to St Mary's Hospital by London Ambulance Service crews.

The driver of the van was also checked over at the scene.

Paddington Fire Station Manager Sam Kazmanli said: “It was a difficult rescue as the car has been pushed up against the railings of a house.

"Firefighters worked hard to free the man as quickly and safely as possible. I’d ask people to avoid the area if possible as there is heavy traffic disruption.”

A London Ambulance spokesperson said: “We were called at 7.31am to reports of a road traffic collision at Gloucester Place and Crawford Street in W1.

“We sent three ambulance crews and an incident officer to the scene. We treated three patients at the scene.

“We treated a man reported to be in his thirties for back pain, who was taken as a priority to St Mary's Hospital, Paddington.

“We treated another patient for a head injury. They were also taken to St Mary's Hospital.

“We checked over another patient for an ankle injury but they were not taken to hospital.”

A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said a 34-year-old man was taken to hospital, adding that police were awaiting an update on the condition of the second driver, a 37-year-old man.
