A car flipped over after demolishing a lamppost outside Belmarsh Prison this afternoon, leaving a woman in hospital.

A photograph from the scene shows debris strewn across the road surface, with the remains of the lamppost blocking a pedestrian crossing and a set of traffic lights hanging at an angle next to the car.

The vehicle is on its side with a smashed windscreen and crumpled bonnet.

Police said the crash, in Western Way - opposite the Thamesmead jail - happened at about 1.45pm.

London Ambulance Service said it treated a woman thought to be in her 50s for a chest injury before taking her to hospital.

Police added the woman's injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
