One of north London’s busiest high streets was blocked today after a water main burst.

Thames Water said that a 15-inch pipe ruptured at 4am, flooding the A10 Tottenham High Road and blocking it in both directions between Seven Sisters Road and

St Ann’s Road.

The leak caused major traffic disruption in south Tottenham and several buses were diverted. There was severe damage to the road surface and a section of pavement sank. However, there was no major flooding of shops or homes, and water supplies were not disrupted because alternative pipes were used.

A Thames Water spokesman said the broken section of pipe can only be replaced after the water is pumped away, and the road will have to be repaired. He said the project will take up to a week.

Last week, the North Circular was closed after a leak near Brent Cross shopping centre.
