Brit school student George O’Regan’s chance for film glory

Dame Helen Mirren: 'Dream to Screen is an exciting opportunity for young people'

A teenager who made his first animation in his bedroom aged eight is the youngest finalist in a competition to find UK’s brightest young film-maker.

George O’Regan, 16, of Raynes Park, was one of more than 500 people aged 16 to 25 who pitched an idea in the contest in which the eventual winner will have his or her short film shown in Cineworld cinemas.

Five finalists, chosen by a panel including Dame Helen Mirren and Bafta chief executive Amanda Berry, get a £2,000 budget and the support of a mentor.

Dame Helen said: “Dream to Screen is an exciting opportunity for young people to showcase their ideas and brilliance.” Charlie Palmer, who has directed Death in Paradise and Doctor Who, will help George tell his story of an artist who sets out to paint a landscape.

Other finalists — the winner will be chosen by a public vote — include Onysha Collins, 23, from London, and William Horsefield, 19, from Milton Keynes.
