Apple without a name is picked for London community orchard

A new variety of apple is being introduced to London as part of a growing trend of creating community orchards in the city.

The as-yet unnamed apple has been bred for its unique taste and resistance to diseases. More than 100 trees will be planted in the coming weeks.

The new fruit is the brainchild of the London Orchard Project, which helps communities develop small orchards on land such as housing estates and parks.

The first trees will be planted at an orchard on the Grove Estate in Islington.

Chief executive Kath Rosen said: “We thought it would be a great idea to introduce a new apple to London and give people the chance to taste something different from the fruit you get in supermarkets.

There used to be loads of orchards in London with different apples in different areas.”

The apple, developed by the Frank P Matthews apple company, is described as sweet, aromatic — and easy to grow.
