Coronation Street star John Savident, 74, is to star in the European premiere of Cole Porter’s final musical.
Savident, best known as butcher Fred Elliott in the TV soap, will play the title role in Aladdin. It is inspired by the fairy tale but is not a pantomime. The work was presented as a one-off TV broadcast in 1958. Now it will be heard after Cole Porter expert Ian Marshall Fisher trawled the Porter archive. He said: “Most people would be completely unaware of his last show, at the end of a 30-plus year career.” Aladdin will be performed at the Lilian Baylis Studio at Sadler’s Wells over the next three weekends.
