Next year’s GCSEs are set to be delayed for the same amount of time as A-levels are pushed back for, education sources revealed today.

It comes after reports that A-levels will be postponed for three weeks until mid-July to help pupils catch up after months of school closures.

An official announcement from the Department for Education is expected this month.

Some experts are calling for the exams to be cancelled like they were this year because pupils have missed so much work during the pandemic. Grades would instead be worked out using teacher assessments and course work.

But the Department for Education insists it still expects exams to take place next summer.

There are fears that poorer students will be at a disadvantage if they do go ahead because they have not had access to as much online learning or technology.

Sir Dan Moynihan, CEO of the Harris Federation, the biggest academy chain in London, has called for the Government to provide extra funding to ensure there is a level playing field.

The Government has already announced a £1 billion fund for school catch-up but two thirds of it is not targeted at disadvantaged pupils. The portion that is, £350 million for a tutoring programme, will not start until November.

Sir Dan said: “The Government’s agenda is to level up and levelling up requires some people being lifted further than others.”

The Harris Federation has benefited from a £2million charitable donation to help students catch up, including paying for Saturday classes.

A spokeswoman for the DfE said: “We will continue to work with school and college stakeholders, Ofqual and the exam boards to ensure that exams in 2021 are fair.”
