The Met's gang crime unit is investigating after two men were shot and a group armed with baseball bats were seen chasing a car in south London.

Scotland Yard said nobody was injured in the two incidents, which are believed to be connected and happened in the space of a few minutes on Monday.

Police were called at 12.35 on Monday to reports of shots fired in Bennetts Close, Mitcham.

Witnesses said a man entered the close and fired at two men before running into a park.

Detectives searched the area but the gunman had fled the scene by the time they arrived.

Around 10 minutes later, a group of men wielding baseball bats were seen chasing a silver people carrier down nearby Tamworth Lane.

There have been no arrests after the incidents.

Detective Sergeant Jeremy Hooper, from the Met's Trident gang unit, said: "I'm appealing for the public's help to trace the gunman and the men seen chasing the people carrier beforehand."

Anyone with information should call police on 02087858580 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
