The mother of a popular university student killed in a hit-and-run in The Mall today spoke of her anguish.

Stacey Cooke, 22, from Shoreham, Kent, was struck by two Mercedes E-Class cars near Buckingham Palace at 2.20am last Friday.

The planning and property development student at Nottingham Trent University was working at chartered surveyors firm Mann Smith, based in Whitehall, at the time of her death.

Miss Cooke’s mother Kim said: “I’m so upset. I’m grieving for my daughter.”

Ms Cooke was studying planning and property development at Nottingham Trent University.

Her former headteachter Jill Milner yesterday paid tribute to her, describing her as “a diligent and extremely well-liked student who had many friends here”.

The driver of the first car involved in the incident stopped but the driver of the second sped away.

A 42-year-old man was arrested later on suspicion of failing to stop at the scene of an accident and causing death by dangerous driving. He was bailed until February pending further inquiries.

Paramendics tried in vain to revive Miss Cooke at the scene.

Police want witnesses to the collision to call them on 101.
