Police were today involved in a standoff at a flat in south London.

Roads in the Streatham Hill area were cordoned off by officers after they were called to reports of a "disturbance" at a property.

The Met said officers were on the scene in Thornton Avenue this morning to negotiate with a man inside.

Veronica Wall, who lives in Sternhold Avenue, passed the scene on her way to the station just before 8am.

She told the Standard: "The police had blocked Thornton Avenue off at the junction of Sternhold Avenue near the vets.

"A police van plus two cars either end [were] blocking off the road with blue tape so nothing could pass."

A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said this morning: "Police were called to Thornton Avenue, Brixton, at approximately at 6.30am to reports of a disturbance at a flat.

"Police are currently speaking to a man in the flat. Police negotiators are on scene. Cordons are in place."

Buses were also diverted while the incident was in progress.

Routes 50 and 255 were subject to diversions and delays in both directions.

The standoff came to an end several hours later, at about 12.30pm when officers from the Territorial Support Group forced entry to the flat.

A man was detained by police, and taken to an east London hospital to be treated.
