Police patrolling in south London have stumbled across a large cannabis factory housing more than 500 fully grown marijuana plants.

The factory was uncovered when officers walking down Crystal Palace Road, Southwark, noticed a strong smell of cannabis in the area.

As they approached a detached house on the road at around 22:30 on Monday night they noticed a man placing large bags inside a wheelie bin. When the man saw the police he ran off.

Upon entering the house the officers discovered four large rooms full of plants set up with ventilation and heating equipment.

The man was believed to have been in the process of cropping and moving the cannabis out of the property when the police found him.

Sergeant Rob Goodwin from Bromley Police said: “This seizure represents a major and unexpected dent in the network of cannabis supply in the South East London area and was brought about through proactive local neighbourhood policing”.

Enquiries are still ongoing to trace the man.
