Police are investigating reports that cats have been found hanged or mutilated in a street in south west London.

A spate of killings is said to have taken place in roads surrounding Haggard Road, Twickenham.

In one incident on November 21 a cat was found hanging from a tree with a noose around its neck near garages, while another was found mutilated.

Police believe the cats are being lured to their deaths with food before being hanged.

Animal charity Hounslow Animal Welfare Society (HAWS) have been warning cat owners to be vigilant and to take care when letting their animals outside on their Facebook page.

One customer called the charity in distress after police discovered her pet had been hanged.

The woman, who wants to remain anonymous, was forced to inform her nine-year-old son of the incident.

A spokesman for the Met said: "On Friday, November 21, at approximately 6.55am police were called to reports of a lifeless cat hanging from a tree near the garages at the end of Haggard Road, TW1.

"Officers arrived on scene and found a domestic cat with a noose around its neck hanging from a tree."

No arrests have been made and police continue to make enquiries.
