A careless thief who is alleged to have stolen £18,000 worth of jewellery is being hunted by police - after leaving a picture of himself at the scene.

His mobile was picked up by police, who were greeted with a 'selfie' by the suspect when they checked the phone's wallpaper.

The image shows French national Germain Ibrahim Fofana, 27, posing in headphones with a huge gold watch strapped around his upper arm.

It was released by police after a raid of Ernest Jones in Kingston, which detectives believed could be linked to a string of jewellery thefts across the capital.

During the raid, on Sunday, Fofana is alleged to have posed as a customer who wanted to buy his female accomplice an engagement ring.

The duo are said to have entered the shop with a child in a buggy at around 1.45pm, picked out two rings, before leaving and saying they would return later.

Around 30 minutes later, the male suspect returned on his own to ask to look at both rings again, as well as a wedding band.

Having been handed the rings, he fled the scene - but accidentally left his phone stowed in a bag in the shop.

Detective Sergeant Damion Cummings said: "In his hurry to run out of the shop, the suspect left his mobile phone on the table alongside his bag.

"While police were on scene the phone lit up having received a text message and a picture of the suspect was saved as the background. It was then the shop assistant who served him was able to identify the person in the picture."

Police said Fofana is also wanted for shoplifting, robbery and burglary.

He is described as slim with French accent, and was last seen wearing a light blue shirt, grey suit trousers and boating shoes.

His female accomplice is of large build and was wearing all black clothing. She had long black hair.
