The president of the Oxford Union has been arrested on suspicion of rape.

Benjamin Sullivan, 21, was arrested this morning by Thames Valley Police.

The student, who is believed to have been studying at Christ Church College, Oxford, was arrested in the city on suspicion of rape and attempted rape.

The prestigious Oxford Union debating society was founded in 1823, and boasts alumni including William Gladstone, Herbert Asquith and Edward Heath.

A spokeswoman for Thames Valley Police said: "I can confirm a 21-year-old man from Oxford has been arrested today on suspicion of rape and attempted rape. He remains in custody."

A spokesman for Oxford University declined to comment.

Thames Valley Police later confirmed the man has been released on police bail until June 18.
