The second of two girls struck down in an alleged hit-and-run on New Year’s Eve has died, police say.
Zaneta Korkova, 11, died in hospital on Monday while her cousin Helina Kotlarova, 12, died at the scene of the crash in Oldham near Manchester on Saturday.
The two girls were killed after they were struck by a car while crossing Ashton Road at about 7.15pm on New Year’s Eve, according to police.
Police said the driver of the car did not stop at the scene.
Five men have reportedly been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. The men – aged 59, 48, 38, 23, and 18 – remain in police custody.
Helina’s sister Sylva, 19, earlier said that the two girls were holding hands as they crossed the road after leaving a shop with a group of family and friends.
She told the BBC that her sister had “asked mum for £2 as she just wanted to buy some food.
“It’s just hard to believe she has gone, she was just too young," she said.
The family of seven sisters and one brother moved to Manchester from the Czech Republic eight years ago.
