Rescuers lifted a Maserati with their bare hands to release two police officers allegedly mown down by the driver in Neasden.

The two Pcs — a man and a woman in their thirties — suffered critical injuries as the supercar ploughed into them at about 3.40am yesterday.

The officers were returning to their patrol car on the A406 near Brent Park after attending another incident.

Today, the Met revealed that colleagues who arrived at the scene lifted the Maserati so that paramedics could reach the officers. It is understood the woman was pinned against a wall.

They were both taken to hospital suffering multiple injuries including fractures to the pelvis and legs.

The male officer had a seven-hour operation yesterday and remained in intensive care today. His female colleague also remained in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Commander Dave Musker said: “We are incredibly grateful to the officers who responded and the London Ambulance staff who gave treatment at the scene.

“The care these officers were given was amazing; 20 years ago it might have been a different story.”

The driver, believed to be 50, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and failing to give a breath test, and remained in custody today. A passenger, in her forties, was also taken to hospital, but her injuries were not said to be serious.

The full details of the incident remain unclear but the Maserati also crashed into a nearby home. Witnesses should contact police on 020 8991 9555.

A fund for the officers has so far raised more than £11,000.
