A 53-year-old man was taken to hospital after being stabbed during a fight in New Cross.

Lewisham Police confirmed that the man was stabbed in a park close to Casella Road around 6pm yesterday evening after a fight broke out.

He was rushed to hospital for treatment of wounds to his face, back and arms.

A 37-year-old woman also sustained minor injuries during the scuffle.

No one has been arrested over the attack and officers believe the suspect fled before they arrived.

A spokesman for Lewisham Police said: "It appears as though the people involved are all local people but the reasons for the fight are currently unknown.

"There are several lines of enquiries we are following with regards to the identity of the suspect who made off from the scene before we arrived.

"Lewisham police are speaking to several witnesses but are keen for more to come forward."

The attack comes following a spate of stabbings across the capital over the weekend.

On Saturday night, emergency services rushed to Spikes Bridge Road in Southall where a 33-year-old man was "ambused by hooded attackers".

Three men leapt from the vehicle and stabbed him up to four times with a long curved weapon – which some witnesses said they believed to be a sword - and kicked him on the ground just before 11pm.

He was pronounced dead in hospital yesterday morning.

A 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and is being held at a north London police station.

The brutal attack came just hours after a man was found with stab wounds in a west London street.

Police were called by the London Ambulance Service at 3.30am on Saturday, after the man was slashed in Boston Manor Road, Brentford.

The 22-year-old was taken to a west London hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

On Friday night, 31-year-old Luther "Beanz" Edwards died after being knifed in the chest outside busy Bethnal Green Tube station following a boxing match.

Devastated friends and relatives of Mr Edwards, who was believed to be the father of two young daughters, have paid tribute to him on social media.

Friend Kimberley Chaters-Walker said on Facebook: "I am utterly in shock to hear such sad news.

"Sending my condolences to all the family and friends.

"I still can't even find the right words to say right now. Another life taken too soon.

"Rest in peace my friend Luther aka Beanz."

Leo Naphtali Blair wrote earlier today: "Sad news this morning, I'm heartbroken. Rest In Power my bro Luther Edwards Beanz Leon."

Officers are urging witnesses to call 101 with any information on the stabbing in New Cross.
