A man was today fighting for his life in hospital after he was assaulted during a fight in Brixton last night, police said.

The victim, in his 20s, suffered a serious head injury when violence broke out in Brixton Road just before midnight.

Police said he was taken to a south London hospital where he remains in critical condition.

A 22-year-old man was later arrested in Croydon on suspicion of GBH. He is today in custody in a south London police station.

Police said there is no clear connection between the violence and yesterday's Brixton Splash festival and street party.

A spokesman said: "There is nothing to indicate that at this stage, but obviously that will form part of the investigation."
