A murder investigation has been launched after a woman and a baby were found dead at a home in Hackney.

Police said a 45-year-old woman, a 23-month-old baby girl and a 53-year-old man were found with injuries by officers and the London Ambulance Service just after 9am this morning.

The woman and the baby were pronounced dead at the scene, in Oswald's Mead near Hackney Marsh.

Scotland Yard said the man is under arrest on suspicion of murder in an east London hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The victims are yet to be formally identified, and post-mortems will be held in due course, according to police.

Investigators from the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), which oversees complaints against police forces in England and Wales, are exploring the victim's prior contact with police.

The move came following a referral from the Directorate of Professional Standards, a department within the Metropolitan Police which is responsible for investigating the conduct of its officers.

Detectives from the Homicide and Major Crime Command are investigating. The police probe is being lead by Detective Chief Inspector Charles King.

Anyone with any information is asked to call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
