Scotland Yard detectives are preparing to return to Portugal for fresh interviews in the Madeleine McCann inquiry, it was claimed today.

A new prosecutor in Portugal has approved a request from the Met inquiry team to carry out further interviews with about 10 witnesses — including some who were questioned immediately after Madeleine vanished from her holiday apartment in Praia da Luz more than seven years ago — according to Portuguese daily paper Jornal de Noticias. Portuguese police will carry out the interviews in the presence of the British detectives.

The Yard’s Operation Grange inquiry is running in parallel with a Portuguese probe, reopened in May more than five years after being shelved. Met detectives suspect Madeleine, who was three when she vanished, may have been killed or snatched during a bungled break-in.
