A man has been arrested after an elderly pedestrian was killed in a suspected hit and run crash in west London.

The 81-year-old man was struck down on Hammersmith Road in Kensington at around 9.30pm on Saturday night.

He was rushed to a central London hospital where doctors fought to save his life but he died in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police said the driver failed to stop at the scene of the crash, which happened at the junction with Edith Road.

On Wednesday police revealed they have arrested a 21-year-old man on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene.

Officers also found the car involved in a crash, a BMW 5-series which was discovered abandoned on Stanwick Road just minutes away from the collision.

Detectives with the Met Police are continuing their appeal for information and witnesses and want to speak with anyone who saw the crash, the car leave the scene or the car being abandoned.

The arrested man has been bailed to a date in mid-March.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit's witness appeal line on 020 8543 5157 or via 101.
