Detectives are hunting a thief who stole a professional musician's century-old violin on a train in south-east London.

A man swiped the antique instrument, made in about 1920, from the overhead luggage rack of a train between Barnehurst and Dartford.

British Transport Police said the violinist had forgotten to take the "cherished and expensive" instrument out of the rack.

On Wednesday the force released a CCTV image of a man wanted in connection with May 1 theft.

Police said the "cherished and expensive" violin had now been returned to its owner

He boarded the train at Barnehurst before leaving at Dartford with the violin, in a case also containing two bows.

The instrument was later found and returned to the violinist.

Detective constable Jennifer Brown said: “I am keen to speak to the man in the CCTV image as I believe he may have information that could help with the investigation.

"Thankfully the instrument has been reunited with its owner, but I am still keen to speak to the man in the CCTV image."

Anyone would any information should call British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40 or text 61016, citing reference 190 and the date May 31, 2017.
