A care home owner splashed out on a Jimmy Choo designer handbag and paid family members as “ghost” employees as she raided around £250,000 from its accounts over five years, a court heard.

Abeeda Khan, 52, is accused of using funds from Oakleigh House nursing home to pay for tradesmen to work on her own home and allegedly made a string of bogus claims from petty cash.

It is said she also put relatives including her cousin, brother-in-law, and sister-in-law on the payroll despite them not working for the home, and spent more than £46,000 on the company credit card on shopping trips.

“Various purchases are made on the home’s credit card for the defendant’s personal use,” prosecutor Notu Hoon told Harrow crown court.

“There were purchases in Tesco, Morrisons and for a Jimmy Choo handbag.”

Khan was co-owner of the care home in Hatch End, Harrow, when she is accused of carrying out the frauds between July 2012 and September 2017.

Abeeda told police her co-owner at the 19-bed nursing home “consented and encouraged her actions”, the jury heard.

“There is no evidence of agreement and the co-owner rejects the assertion,” said Mr Hoon.

Khan, from Southall, denies five counts of fraud. The trial continues.
