A 13-year-old schoolboy has been repeatedly stabbed during his lunch break in Scotland.

The teenager was stabbed in his stomach and knees and also suffered a head injury in the attack, which happened “during the school lunch break” near Shawlands Academy in Glasgow.

Police and paramedics scrambled to Kilmarnock Road at around 1.35pm and found the injured 13-year-old at the scene. He was rushed to a nearby hospital for surgery.

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokeswoman said his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

A 15-year-old boy was arrested after the incident.

Paramedics were at the scene within two minutes of being called, and the ambulance spokeswoman added: "We received a call at 1.34pm today to attend an incident on Kilmarnock Road, Glasgow.

"We dispatched one ambulance and our paramedic response unit to the incident and one male patient was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital."

Police cordoned off the area where the incident took place, just a few hundred yards away from Shawlands Academy, as pupils stood at a bus stop near the scene.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "At 1.30pm police were called to reports a boy had been stabbed during a disturbance on Kilmarnock Road, near Skirving Street in Shawlands.

"He was taken by ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for treatment.

"A 15-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the incident and enquiries are ongoing."

A Glasgow City Council spokeswoman said they were aware that one of their pupils was incident in an incident “during the school lunch break”.

The school is helping police with their enquiries, she added.

Responding to the stabbing, Scotland’s First Minister and Glasgow MSP Nicola Sturgeon said: “Very worrying incident in my constituency and my thoughts are with the injured boy.

“I’ve just had an update from the local police and I know they’re doing everything possible to investigate the incident and provide appropriate reassurance around the school over next few days.”
