An elderly man has died after he was struck by a lorry in an alleged hit-and-run outside a busy Tube station.

The 71-year-old man was hit by the HGV outside Earl’s Court station on Friday night, police said.

Police and paramedics raced to the scene after the crash at 9.25pm.

Medics fought to save the victim and he was rushed to hospital where he died a short while later.

London’s Air Ambulance was also scrambled to the scene in Earl's Court Road.

One Twitter user named Stan wrote: "Earl's Court completely locked off with "emergency response units" - red vans parked everywhere."

Another user wrote: #EarlsCourt tube entrance is currently closed, terrible accident apparently. Thoughts for all involved.”

Police said the lorry driver did not stop at the scene and it is not known whether he knew that his vehicle had been in collision with a pedestrian.

Detectives have a released a CCTV image of the lorry believed to have been involved in the crash near to the scene.

It is described as a large, white, articulated lorry, with three axles on the trailer and three axles on the tractor unit.

The Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) is investigating and the driver is urged to contact police.

Police believe they know the identity of the deceased, but await formal identification and confirmation that next of kin have been informed.

Anyone with information is asked to call SCIU officers at Merton on 020 8543 5157 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
