A south London primary school was placed on lockdown while police hunted for a man wielding a machete nearby.

Children were forced to remain inside while officers searched the area surrounding Wolsey Junior Academy in Croydon on Wednesday.

Two males, whose ages are not known, were arrested at the scene on suspicion of affray, criminal damage and possession of cannabis.

It was not immediately clear if a weapon was recovered after the incident unfolded in King Henrys Drive, New Addington, at about 4.10pm.

No one was injured, Scotland Yard has said.

The school has been approached for comment.

A Met Police spokeswoman said: “Police were called to a report of a man with a machete.

“Officers attended, and children at a nearby school were kept indoors as a precaution as officers searched the area.”

“Two males were arrested for affray, criminal damage and possession of cannabis. They were taken to a south London police station.”
