One of the brothers behind the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing has been sentenced to death by lethal injection.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 21, was sentenced today by a jury in the US state of Massachusetts, where the attack killed three and left 264 injured in 2013.

The jury turned down the other option of Tsarnaev being imprisoned for life without the possibility of release.

His defence sought to save Tsarnaev's life by pinning most of the blame on his radicalised older brother but prosecutors portrayed him as an equal partner in the attack and so heartless he placed a bomb behind children and killed an eight-year-old boy.

His brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev died during a stand off with police as the pair sought to evade authorities.

Tsarnaev showed no reaction as the jury sentenced him.

He was found guilty last month of placing a pair of homemade pressure-cooker bombs at the race's crowded finish line on April 15, 2013, before fatally shooting a policeman a few days later.

The jury's decision does not mean Tsarnaev's death is imminent. He will be formally sentenced Tsarnaev at a late hearing and his defence are likely to appeal the decision.
