The president of the Students' Union at the University of Oxford will not face charges over an alleged rape, police have said.

Ben Sullivan, 21, who is a member of Christ Church College, was arrested last month on suspicion of rape and attempted rape.

The student from Knightsbridge, west London, refused to stand down following the allegations, which related to two female Oxford students, but was replaced by his deputy Mayank Banerjee.

He is understood to have been told the case against him had been dropped after answering police bail this afternoon.

In a statement, Thames Valley police said: "No further action was taken against the 21-year-old man from Oxford arrested on suspicion of rape and attempted rape."
