Detectives have launched an investigation after a 14-year-old boy was stabbed in front of horrified shoppers near a supermarket in east London.

Police and paramedics were scrambled to the scene of the knifing close to Asda in Tollgate Road, Beckton, at around 4.30pm on Tuesday.

The teenager was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital. Police are trawling through CCTV footage from around the area as part of the hunt for the attacker.

No arrests have been made and a police cordon remains in place as inquiries continue. The stabbing happened in broad daylight close to shoppers and children who had just finished school.

The Asda is based on a busy retail park and police are scouring the area for clues. A police statement said: "Officers and the London Ambulance Service attended. A 14-year-old boy was taken to hospital for treatment; his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. "A crime scene remains in place. At this early stage there have been no arrests and enquiries continue." Anyone with information is asked to call police via 101 quoting reference CAD 4958/07Nov.
