Police have arrested a man in connection with a suspected homophobic attack when a gay clubber was sprayed in the face with ammonia.

Scotland Yard said a 31-year-old was arrested in Kent on suspicion of an assault near the Lightbox club in Vauxhall in the early hours of Sunday morning.

He was being questioned at a south London police station today.

The 23-year-old victim described how he feared he could be blinded in one eye following the attack.

He said: "It went in my eyes. I thought I'd never see again. My face was melting. The man walked away, like it was mission accomplished. He had gone out intending to blind someone."

The victim has a burnt cornea and may not regain full vision. His friend's tongue was swollen after some bleach went in his mouth.

Two women, thought to be East European, shouted homophobic abuse at the man and a friend during the incident at around 4am.

Then a bearded man sprayed the first victim's face.

During the same evening, a third man was also sprayed with a substance in the vicinity of the nightclub.

Two women who were seen in the CTV images have come forward to police but they have not been arrested.
