Singer Chris Brown has been slammed for describing the Ebola outbreak as "population control".

Human rights charity ActionAid branded his remark "thoughtless" and "unfortunate" and suggested he should make a donation to an Ebola charity to apologise.

The deadly epidemic has killed more than 4,000 people, mainly in West Africa and one person in the US.

Brown posted the controversial statement to his 13 million Twitter followers.

He wrote: "I don't know ... But I think this Ebola epidemic is a form of population control. S*** is getting crazy bruh."

The first message, which had 12,000 retweets, was widely criticised on the social networking site.

Brown later posted: "Let me shut my black a** up!"

An ActionAid spokeswoman responded that he should "think before you tweet".

She added: "We do not need thoughtless phrases which reach out to Chris Brown's many followers but add nothing to their understanding.

"It was unfortunate that he tweeted this in the first place. He should make a large donation to charities working on Ebola and encourage his followers to do the same."
