It’s the last week to enter the National Geographic Travel Photographer of the Year competition, and if this first look at some of the snaps contending for the top spot reveals anything, it’s that competition is stiff this year.

There have been thousands of entries from people across the globe, varying from professional photographers to holidaying amateurs.

Spectacular scenes of buffalo under the stars, river deltas in south Iceland and daredevils straddling trains in Bangladesh are just some of the shots captured in the world’s most stunning locations.

Also among the astonishing photos is Kathleen Cameron's image of gentle giant elephants holding onto each other, trunk to tail, as they walk the fields of The Crags Elephant Sanctuary in Plettenberg, South Africa.

The annual competition celebrates the best in travel photography, encouraging people to share their stunning travel experiences from around the globe.

Fancy entering? Photographers have until May 27 to get their pictures submitted. The grand prize winner will receive a seven-day polar bear photo safari for two in Churchill, Manitoba, in Canada’s Arctic – the self-proclaimed polar bear capital of the world and a popular destination for nature photographers.
