A small city in Finland, 450 kilometres northeast of the capital Helsinki, has announced it will welcome a world first. Guests at new eco-hotel in Kontiolahti, will have the price of their stay determined by their carbon footprint during the visit.
The Arctic Blue Resort, which is set to open in 2022, will run on emission-based prices meaning the smaller the environmental impact, the less guests will pay.
Guests who consume less energy, make sustainable food choices and attend ecological activities could see their stay discounted by up to 50 per cent.
A new kind of sustainable holiday, the hotel will be built with natural materials, be powered by renewable energy sources and will have its own water treatment room.
“We want to offer people a world-class eco-vacation and encourage them to make sustainable choices by having emission-based pricing for their stay. Visitors of the resort can influence the cost for example by consuming less energy, attending ecological activities and making sustainable dietary choices,” says Mikko Spoof, Vice President and founder of Arctic Brands Group.
“We want the resort to be a place of true tranquillity and thus encourage our guests to be more present in the moment and embrace digital detox.”
Each of the resort’s rooms will be uniquely decorated, offering guests the chance to enjoy 360-degree forest views or to sleep under a starry sky.
Guests visiting Arctic Blue can also expect a seasonal menu of locally-sourced food at the in-house restaurant as well as seasonal activities including ice swimming and snowshoeing in the winter and rowing and berry-picking in the summer.
