This week in London: Brixton riots and London Bridge finds a new home

It was the week that saw London Bridge disassembled to move to a new location and a three-day riot in south London.

The recently introduced ‘Operation Swamp’ saw 1000 people stopped in six days, exacerbating racial tensions in Brixton in 1981.

Damage to buildings in the area around Atlantic Road would have cost around £26 million in today’s money, and there were 300 reported injuries.

During this week in 1968, American businessman Robert P McCulloch paid one million pounds to have London Bridge moved over 5000 miles away to a lake in Arizona.
