Road test: MAZDA6 ticks all the boxes
Mazda’s flagship model, the 6, has been a hit since it appeared in 2002. Now there’s a handsome all-new replacement which marks a big leap forward for the marque.
It boasts class-leading economy and much better finish than before, as well as a raft of technical innovations which make it a keen contender in the Ford Mondeo, VW Passat and Toyota Avensis category.
Engines are 2.2-litre petrol and diesel units with 150 or 175PS. The more powerful versions pulled keenly at the car’s launch in Portugal but the diesel proved the sweeter and more versatile. Available as saloons or estates, head and legroom are generous, and there are 489 litres of cargo space in the saloon and 522 in the Tourer.
The 6 is 10 per cent lighter than before and by using a brake energy regeneration system, stop-start technology and Mazda’s Skyactiv fuel efficiency system, the company claims 67.3mpg for the lower power diesel and 51.4mpg for the petrol.
The ride is good and there is virtually no body roll. Some versions have swivelling headlamps which illuminate corners before you reach them, and dip automatically for oncoming traffic. Quiet engines, tidy handling and neutral steering make the Mazda6 an easy car in which to cover long distances and its smart new lines help make it a strong contender in this hard-fought category. It ticks all the boxes it needs to, and does so in some style.
