Review: Peugeot's new affordable SUV

French car maker aims to build on popularity of original crossover with more SUV-like Mk2. What’s the newcomer like on the road?

Peugeot was on to a good thing with its original 3008 crossover, as the model proved a big seller for the French brand. Now it hopes to repeat that success with the second-generation variant, whose rugged new styling moves it firmly from the MPV camp into SUV waters.

Of course, the off-road design is more for show than go, as the newcomer doesn’t come with four-wheel drive, not even as an option. However, as a kind of halfway house, it does carry over its predecessor’s Grip Control system.

We drove the 129bhp 1.2 Puretech-powered model, whose three-cylinder engine is well matched to the six-speed manual gearbox. It’s a pleasingly quiet and efficient performer, although you may prefer the diesel if you plan on doing a lot of loaded-up miles.

The 3008’s dynamics impress. It has a mainly smooth ride over all but the most pot-holed roads, and the handling is sweet with plenty of grip, well controlled lean in corners and good, if slightly over-sensitive, steering. Equally satisfying is the Peugeot’s economy, which hit 40.0mpg-plus during our sprightly test drive.

Inside, the cabin has a really invigorating atmosphere, thanks to its quality plastics and stylish design. The dashboard boasts an Audi Virtual Cockpit-style 12.3in display, plus an 8.0in infotainment touchscreen. City braking, park assist, dual-zone climate control and smartphone connectivity are among the standard-fit kit, while luggage is well catered for with easy-folding rear seats and a large, versatile load area. The front passenger seat also drops down in every model save the entry-level one, and four adults should be able to fit in the car in comfort.

We thought the previous-generation 3008 would be hard to beat, but Peugeot has done itself proud.
