Pictured smiling with his mother and three brothers, Tom Holland looks like any ordinary teenage boy.

But his life is set to change forever after the young Londoner was named as the new Spider-Man.

The Wolf Hall star, 19, from Kingston — pictured four years ago with his mother Nikki Holland and brothers Harry, Sam and Paddy — was yesterday unveiled as the replacement for star Andrew Garfield when Spider-Man returns to cinemas in 2017.

Holland is expected to first appear as the character in a cameo role in Marvel’s forthcoming Captain America: Civil War, due for release next year.

He was one of six actors considered for the role in the £2.5 billion franchise, and is the latest in a string of British actors to be cast in Hollywood superhero roles, including Henry Cavill as Superman and Christian Bale as Batman. Tom Rothman, chairman of Sony Pictures, said: “We saw many terrific young actors, but Tom’s screen tests were special.”

His father Dominic said he was “numb” with excitement for his son.

Holland made his West End debut aged 12 playing the title role in Billy Elliot, while his Hollywood break came in 2012 film The Impossible. He attended Wimbledon College before joining The Brit School in Croydon.
