The second annual World Dog Surfing Championship saw some of the world’s most water-friendly dogs take to the waves in a hilariously adorable fashion.

Held on Saturday at Linda Mar Beach in Pacifica, California, dogs came by the dozen to show off their impressive surfing skills.

The hairy athletes competed in various categories, including tandem surfing - which saw pairs of dogs crash through the waves in four-legged pairs.

In addition to riding some ‘gnarly’ waves, the dogs also competed in frisbee catching and ball fetching, in the hopes of being crowned the ultimate canine surfer.

There was even a costume contest for dogs who’d prefer not to get their paws wet.

“Your dog is either into it, or isn’t. That’s the bottom line,” Homer Henard, whose 6-year-old dog Skyler took part, told The San Mateo Daily Journal. “If your dog’s into it, then it could be a cool rad thing to share.”

The dogs main challenge is to stay afloat on the board, reports the San Francisco Gate.

Thankfully, they aren’t asked to perform any tricks, just to ride out the wave as long as they can - and as you can see from the pictures, these buoyant dogs did not disappoint.

The event was held to raise money for local charities, and a portion of the proceeds will be given to dog, surfing and environmental nonprofit organisations.
