Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are engaged!

The happy couple announced their engagement this morning after weeks of speculation and their wedding will be held in the spring of next year.

While royal weddings are often extravagant, there is also a set of bizarre rules they need to follow.

1. The groom’s outfit has to be a military uniform

Like we saw on Prince William in 2011, the groom has to wear a military uniform on his wedding day. This tradition dates back to Prince Albert.

William chose a red uniform from the Irish Guards and Charles wore his full dress naval commander uniform for his wedding with Princess Diana. Prince Harry served in the army for ten years, rising to the rank of Captain and undertaking two tours of Afghanistan, so we can expect to see him in a military outfit also.

2. The Royal family always sit on the right hand side of the church

They will always sit here during a royal wedding.

3. They have two wedding cakes

Because they’re royals and they can. Usually a fruit cake, Kate and Wills went for behemoth chocolate fudge cake instead.

4. The Royals don’t wear wedding rings

It is customary for the royals not to wear a wedding ring – something both Philip and William have adhered to. However Charles wore his wedding ring throughout his and Diana’s marriage until 2005.
