It's a wrap. It's an arty magazine... no, it's both

Here's wrapping paper so arty it seems a shame to spoil it with folds and creases. It comes not as a tacky roll from the high street but as a new large-format art magazine called Wrap. This has nine pull-out sheets of original designs by talented illustrators on a heavy high-quality mat paper. Sheets are held loosely in place by a large elastic band - no staples or glue to spoil the artwork. You also get an interview with each of the designers, and matching gift cards. At just £9.50, Wrap is a snip.

"We wanted a platform for Britain's superb gang of illustrators and graphic artists - both new and established talent," says Polly Glass, who co-founded Wrap with her partner Christopher Harrison. They are design graduates who met while creating jewellery for Cath Kidston, Paul Smith, Ted Baker and other clients. The current issue - just published - will sell at internet design mag Dezeen's Temporium pop-up in Monmouth Street, WC2, which opens on Thursday.

Wrappings elsewhere are also making arty efforts. Double-sided papers are big this year with London designer Ella Doran - known for her photo-realism - having collected enchanting vintage glass baubles, and shows them neatly boxed on one side of the paper, and hanging on the other. Design duo Sam Hurt and Jude Biddulph of Suck UK at Oxo Tower (more on the edge than edgy) emulate pop art, backing sober stripes with a Page Three pin-up collage (male and female versions ...) The post-war utility tip was to iron old paper for reuse. Now it comes in handy once again. Pass the parcel - then get the wrappings framed.
